Duplex steel is not entirely austenitic nor completely ferritic.

Duplex Steel Advantages
Strength: the strength of duplex stainless steel is about twice that of ordinary austenitic or ferritic stainless steel.
Toughness and ductility: duplex stainless steels have higher toughness and ductility than ferritic stainless steels, although they are not as tactile as austenitic stainless steels. Duplex steels can be easily used at temperatures of at least -50 ° C because they have better ductility than ferritic steels at low temperatures.
Corrosion resistance: duplex stainless steel has very strong corrosion resistance. Even in chloride and sulfide environments, duplex stainless steel also shows very high resistance to stress corrosion cracking (SCC).
Heat resistance: duplex stainless steel has higher thermal conductivity and lowers thermal expansion than austenitic steel.
Cost: the nickel and molybdenum content of duplex stainless steel is lower than that of austenitic stainless steel, thus reducing the cost. In addition, because the yield strength of duplex stainless steel is increased, it can also be thinned to reduce weight.
Weldability: duplex stainless steels tend to have good weldability, and all standard welding processes can be used, although they are not as easy to weld as austenitic stainless steels.
