According to the ASTM A351 CF8M standard, the primary chemical composition of 316 cast stainless steel includes: Carbon (C) ≤0.08%, Manganese (Mn) ≤1.50%, Silicon (Si) ≤1.50%, Phosphorus (P) ≤0.040%, Sulfur (S) ≤0.040%, Chromium (Cr) 18.0–21.0%, Nickel (Ni) 9.0–12.0%, and Molybdenum (Mo) 2.0–3.0%.
Chromium facilitates the formation of a corrosion-resistant passive film; nickel enhances the material's toughness and corrosion resistance; and molybdenum improves its resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion. These alloying elements make CF8M suitable for a variety of industrial fluids and moderately corrosive operating environments.
According to the ASTM A351 CF8M standard, 316 cast stainless steel exhibits a tensile strength (T.S) of ≥485 MPa, a yield strength (Y.S) of ≥205 MPa, and an elongation (EL) of ≥30%.
These mechanical indicators demonstrate that CF8M possesses an excellent balance of strength and ductility, allowing it to withstand mechanical loads while maintaining good deformability — making it well-suited for industrial piping components and other pressure-bearing castings. The 316 stainless steel threaded round cap is primarily used to seal the ends of industrial pipelines.
